Viv's Vent Cleaning

Dryer extension hose replacement.

The thin foil hose behind your dryer is a known fire risk. The upgrade is fast, cheap, and dramatically safer.

If you look behind your dryer and see a shiny silver flexible hose — that's the problem. Foil and plastic transition ducts trap lint in their ridges, are easily crushed (when the dryer gets pushed back against the wall), and are explicitly prohibited by current building code in most uses. We swap them out for semi-rigid or rigid metal duct in 15–20 minutes, usually as part of a regular cleaning.

Why this matters

The flex hose behind your dryer is the most lint-prone segment of the entire vent system. Foil hoses trap lint in their ridges and lose airflow over time. They're also the most common ignition site in dryer fires — when a dryer overheats, that hose is the first thing that catches. Metal duct doesn't trap lint, doesn't burn, and doesn't crush when the dryer is pushed back.

What we install

Semi-rigid aluminum or rigid metal duct (your choice), proper clamps (not the foil tape original installations love), and a transition fitting at the wall that allows the dryer to be moved without disconnecting. The dryer ends up sitting an inch or two further from the wall — which is what code calls for anyway.

Frequently asked questions

Is the foil hose really that dangerous?
Yes. Most current model codes prohibit them for new installs. Insurance carriers occasionally deny claims when a dryer fire originated in a foil hose. The upgrade is one of the highest-value safety changes you can make to a laundry room.
Will rigid duct fit behind my dryer?
In almost every case yes — we use a swivel or 90° fitting to make the turn into the wall. The dryer sits 1–2 inches further out than before, which is what's recommended anyway.
Do I need this if my dryer is brand new?
If the install used a foil hose, yes. New dryers don't ship with the transition hose — installers add it on-site, and many default to the cheapest foil option.
